Digital Payments: Ever since the option of digital payments has come, it has become very easy for us to make payments. However, along with this special convenience, online scams have also increased a lot due to this system. According to the data of National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), about 7000 cyber related complaints are registered every day.

Loss of Rs 7061.51 crore

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordinator Center (I4C) said that a large part of online scams come from Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. You will be shocked to hear this figure of 2024. In the first four months of 2024, Indian people have suffered a loss of Rs 7061.51 crore through various types of cyber crimes.

I4C CEO Rajesh Kumar said on Wednesday that the web applications used in these crimes are written in Mandarin language. This increases the possibility of these scammers being from China. The surprising thing is that China is also a victim of similar scams.

Cybercrime cases and their registration have also increased significantly in the last few years. Let’s take a look at the figures. A total of 7,40,000 complaints were registered in the first four months of 2024 i.e. till April. 15.6 lakh complaints were registered in the entire year 2023. This figure was 9,66,000 in 2022, 4,52,000 in 2021, 9,57,000 in 2020 and only 26,049 complaints were registered in 2019.

People of India are losing their hard earned money in different types of scams. The CEO of I4C also told that out of the amount of Rs. 7061.51 crores lost in the last few months, 12 percent i.e. about Rs. 812 crores has been recovered.

In the last four months, Indians have lost more than 1420 crores in online trading scams. About 120 crores have been lost in digital arrest scam, 222.58 crores in investment scam and about 13 crores in romance/dating scam.

How to avoid such scams?

  • To trap Indians, scammers use Indian SIM cards so that no one suspects them and they can trap anyone quickly. If you keep these things in mind, you can avoid these scams.
  • Most people get messages on social media via text that they can earn a lot of money quickly with a small investment. Be careful of such messages as it could be a scam.
  • Many times a person calls you and introduces himself as the HR of a big company and talks about giving a very high salary. Be alert with such messages, this too can be a scam.
  • Do not share your personal and financial details with anyone. Especially do not share your banking details with unknown persons or on chatting apps. If you do this, then the chances of you getting scammed increase.
  • Never download any link or file from an unknown number. This can cause a virus in your phone or your phone can also be hacked.

Do not delay in filing a complaint

The most important information is that if any cyber fraud happens or someone is trying to do it, then immediately inform the cyber crime portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in/) and call 1930 for help. Apart from this, you can also register your complaint on Chakshu, a new website or portal released by the Government of India.
